Chapter 97 - Tortured Chauffeur

The chauffeur who had been specially appointed by Li Luxian for Chen Yi looked into the rearview mirror to see a reflection of a beautiful woman. A smile played over her lips as she steadily glanced out through the windshield with serene expressions. 

"Mam, are you waiting for someone?" He couldn't help but ask.

Chen Yi's face shifted back — a frown forming over her face. "No, why would you think so."

Perhaps because we have been waiting for the last ten minutes without you getting out of the damn car? 

He sighed. He wanted to tell her that as the wife of President Li, it was below her prestige to wait for someone. He had accompanied Madam Li Shanguaan. And other than the presumptuous Wang family, no one had ever dared to make her wait.

"You are right" Suddenly Chen Yi said. It did feel like she was waiting for someone. "It is such a waste. I shouldn't burn up my precious time waiting."

The chauffer was startled. Eh, did she hear his thoughts?

Her next sentence stunned her even more. "Steer to the nearest bakery." 

What? Aren't the ladies from upper-class hyper-conscious of their physique? He had hardly seen anyone try out sweets.

"Mam, if there is anything you want, just tell me. I will have that delivered to you."

"Nope. I like to choose my deserts myself. Why are you being so nosy? Just drive me there." 

"Yes." Being reprimanded, he obliged and pulled off the car.

In the bakery, a good hour had passed when her phone screen flickered. Li Luxian name emerged. Chen Yi happily swiped the screen and placed the phone to her ear while inspecting the desserts. "Hello, did you miss me?"

Li Luxian was a little surprised at the overly excited tone. "Where are you? I have been waiting for you at home."

"Ah, sorry I forgot to tell you. I have a meeting with an agent at a restaurant. It might take me some time."

"Hmm." Li Luxian didn't sound pleased. "How long?"

"Um, depends on how long I intend to make the said agent wait." Chen Yi chuckled darkly.

Li Luxian was amused. "Yi'er, why do I have a feeling that you have been getting too mischievous? Making people wait like this... that's not very good manners. Do I need to punish for your bad behavior?"

Chen Yi pressed her lips in a thin line as she rebutted. "Says the one who had set the whole media ablaze against his own Aunt-in-law, someone in place of your elder. Where were your manners then?"

Li Luxian laughed heartily. The merriness in his laugh seemed to be contagious because after traveling across the line, through her ears, to her soul, it finally settled as a goofy smile on her face. "I'm currently at a bakery. My favorite donuts would finish if I don't get in line soon. I'm hanging up, okay?"

"Wait!" Li Luxian stopped her. "Is Zhang Yufang nearby you?"

"Who?"

"The person I had appointed as your chauffeur. He might be performing driving duties for you but do not underestimate him, he is much more than a simple driver. I had him dressed moderately because of your nagging that you don't like being the center of attention. He should mix up well with the general public." Since Chen Yi's security was crucial, Li Luxian made sure to employ the best of his men for her. 

"Is that so?" Chen Yi cast a glance towards the man who was standing not far from her. 

He had insisted on following her. Chen Yi, a free spirit did not like being under someone's constant surveillance. She, of course, objected. But that unreasonable chauffeur did not let her leave alone. Fuming, having no other way, she invented a unique way to get back at him.

She put a condition that he would have to carry things for her. The innocent chauffeur was unable to grasp the evil intent behind her demand and readily nodded repeatedly in agreement.

As a result, right now, within his arms, he was struggling to balance a pile of delightful deserts extending far above his head; his face was hidden behind the pile but Chen Yi could happily tell it must have been very red from the painful scuffle with those innocent yet hauntingly large number of desserts and sweets. 

Chen Yi had a fair number of moments of laughing sneakily when she caught the gruff, sturdy man stumbling backward and forward, left and right in meticulous attempts to not let fall a single one of them.

"Is he close to you?" Li Luxian anxious voice asked.

Chen Yi coughed lightly. "Yes, yes. He is nearby. And mixing up very well with the public. Quite handy, I must add too!"

"Handy?" Li Luxian asked suspiciously having no idea how his loyal follower was being tortured. "Anyways, there was another thing I wanted to tell you. Make sure to be home before six pm. I have to take you to a party tonight."

Chen Yi's eyes narrowed. "Party? But haven't we agreed that we won't be disclosing our relationship anytime soon? Wouldnt that put us directly in the public eye provided you are followed everywhere by media. " 

"It's a ball. No one will get to see your face." Li Luxian chuckled. "I'll introduce you to everyone as Mrs. Li. There is absolutely no need to reveal your real name. And even if someone insists, we will let out your surname. If anyone tried to probe further, a menacing glare from my side would suffice to shut them up."

Chen Yi could help to shake her head. But she could not deny either. This 'Li' family was, after all, the top families in the whole country. Not many families could counter them. They were like royals in an ancient kingdom.

A menacing glare from the heir of the great 'Li' family would definitely suffice. 

"Alright, I will be back by six." Having a quick glance at the time, she decided to leave.

But not before casually throwing another dozen of desserts over the pile that Zhang Yufang was hardly stabilizing.
