Shu Li hesitated a little over lunch and asked, “What do you think about me buying a house?”

“Buying a house?” It wasn’t so much that she looked down on Shu Li but, with Shu Li’s current income, buying a house was really pushing it.

“Not something like yours. I am talking about a second-hand one. I’ve met someone recently, and he has a house nearby. He said he bought a new house and wanted to sell the old one to help alleviate his finances. I had taken a look at it. It was an older house, but it was well-maintained. Mainly it was inexpensive. They are asking for 70,000 yuan for 35 square meters. I had some money left from the children’s father, that plus what I had earned in the last few months, I have just about enough.”

“Buying a house is a good move but you need to think it through. But this sounds very inexpensive. Are you sure they are not trying to scam you?” Of course buying a house was a good thing. Shu Yan would be telling Shu Li to buy one when her finances improved.

“The person is a teacher at the school. He won’t lie to me.” Shu Li had a lot of faith in the character of a schoolteacher.

“The problem is whether there is a deed? It is very likely that he is selling the house that was assigned to him by his work. Many of these houses are not allowed to be sold.” Many people would try to sell these houses privately. Problem was that there were no deeds.

Technically, the houses belonged to the unit that employed them. They could write a deed and purchase the house. Living there themselves would be fine. Problem was that all of these houses would be demolished in the future.

That was when problems would arise. If they ran into someone not-so-honorable, they would make a fuss then and, as an employee of the unit, the unit would naturally side with them.

They would just refund them the cost then and there, and there would be no repercussion.

What Shu Yan said made sense as well. A human’s mind is the most complicated thing in the world and who is to say that a teacher could resist an amount like that?

“Don’t rush into making a decision. Let me ask around some. You should buy it if it is legitimate.” High risk meant high return. Shu Yan recalled that these houses would be demolished in a few years, and they would be compensated for three times the amount. 35 square meters could be exchanged for a 105-square-meter unit, or a large and a small one. Some would even exchange that for three small units.

“Okay, I’ll wait.” 70,000 – 80,000 yuan was a lot of money. She couldn’t rush into it.

Shu Yan contacted Lao Hu when she returned. Lao Hu let her know that it was possible to sell these houses, but they would need the unit’s approval. Once the unit had signed off on it, they could even get the deed through some connections. That way the buyer couldn’t go back on their words later on.

If that was the case, Shu Yan had Lao Hu take care of the liaising for them. This was his profession, and he knew what he was doing.

Had they gone about doing it themselves, they wouldn’t even know who to talk to. It didn’t take Lao Hu long to find the person in charge and they had agreed that the unit would sign off as long as the seller signed off on it.

Not wanting to wait too long, Shu Li looked for the seller the same day and had all the paperwork taken care of. The unit, too, provided them with written documentation. Lao Hu would spend some money later on and get them a deed. Then the house would completely belong to Shu Li.

Shu Yan hadn’t looked at the house yet, but she figured that there was no downside to buying this place. Now that Shu Li had bought it, she went with her to check the place out.

Lo and behold, the place was very comfortably decorated. 35 square meters with 2 rooms, 1 bathroom, and a kitchen. There was even a small patio for drying clothes. The place was small, but the planning was good. In one of the two rooms was a 1.2-meter-long bed, probably for the adults. There was a bunk bed in the other room for the two children. There was a couch in the living room and a bookshelf behind it lined neatly with a lot of books. There were a lot of pots lined on the patio and very few of them were flowers. Most of them were green onions and Chinese chives. There was a rack to one side and Shu Yan counted 6 pots on it. All of them were just now sprouting and Shu Yan couldn’t tell what they were.

“Oh, you are growing lettuce here?” Shu Yan didn’t recognize them, but Shu Li did. The teacher had some great ideas. They could save a lot of money by growing their own vegetables.

“My wife planted them. We can leave them for you if you like. These lettuce will be ready in a few days. You can pinch some off for noodles and it is both convenient and tasty.” The husband was the one over today. He said that his wife was getting the new place ready and wasn’t able to come.

“Your wife is very good at living her life.” Shu Yan looked around. The small house was very warm and comfortable.

“Thank you. She will be very happy when she hears that.” It was obvious that the couple were very close with each other.
