Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The Sweet Potato in Her Hand Suddenly Was Not Fragrant
“I picked a lot of pigweed.” Ji Zhao quickly caught up with him and said excitedly, “By the way, I also picked up a wild chicken on the mountain. I reckon it weighs three to four catties!”
Rumble rumble-
Before Shen Yao could answer, Ji Zhao’s stomach suddenly rumbled.
She covered her stomach. However, in the silent night, the slightest sound would be magnified infinitely-
“Follow me.” Shen Yao glanced at her and limped into the kitchen.
The bowls and chopsticks in the kitchen had been washed clean. There was not even a grain of rice on the stove.
Ji Zhao silently covered her thunderous stomach. Hunger overwhelmed her, and she could not hide it!
“I’ve already eaten half a sour apple on the mountain just now. I’ll just drink some water to deal with it…” Ji Zhao stole a glance at Shen Yao’s expression and said softly.
Shen Yao did not answer her. Instead, he walked around to the stove, picked up the tongs leaning against the wall, and pulled out two round, dark sweet potatoes.
The moment she saw the sweet potato, Ji Zhao couldn’t help but gulp.
“Should we each have one?” Ji Zhao asked carefully.
“I’m not hungry,” Shen Yao said in a low voice.
“You’re giving them both to me?” Ji Zhao was very surprised, but also very happy.
“Yes.” Shen Yao nodded slightly.
“Shall I start eating?” Ji Zhao, who was squatting on the ground, said with a smile.
She eagerly picked up a sweet potato and gently peeled off the charred skin.
“It’s so sweet!”
Ji Zhao took a bite of the sweet potato and ate it with relish, her face full of happiness.
“Go back to Pomegranate Village at dawn tomorrow.” Shen Yao suddenly looked away and said softly, “From now on, we have nothing to do with each other.”
The sweet potato in her hand suddenly was not fragrant.
Ji Zhao lowered her head and was silent for a long time. After a while, she asked softly, “Can’t you give me another chance? I’ll prove it with my actions.”
Shen Yao shook his head firmly.
“I understand.” Ji Zhao lowered her eyes to hide the disappointment in them and responded gloomily.
After eating a sweet potato, she was not so hungry anymore.
“Then can I stay here tonight? I’ll leave at dawn tomorrow, okay?” Ji Zhao asked softly.
“Mm.”
Shen Yao nodded slightly and turned to leave.
From the beginning to the end, he did not even look at her.
Ji Zhao leaned against the stove and took a nap. Not long after, she leaned against the wall and fell asleep.
When the sky was bright, a strong fragrance of chicken soup floated in the Shen family’s courtyard.
Zhao Lanhua, who had just woken up, frowned in confusion.
In the kitchen, the two-eared pot placed on the stove was steaming. The fragrance of the chicken soup came from here.
There were also two rows of firewood on the haystack near the stove.
Zhao Lanhua walked out of the door and found that the three vats were already filled with water.
“Mother.” Ji Zhao excitedly walked up to Zhao Lanhua, “Good morning!”
“You? What’s that in your arms?”
“Wild duck eggs,” Ji Zhao explained with a smile. “When I went to the river to fetch water, I found a reed bush. There were six wild duck eggs inside!”
When Ji Zhao first went to the river to get water, she discovered that there were several wild ducks hidden in the reeds on the river. At that time, she muttered that it would be even better if she could find wild duck eggs.
In the end, when she went to the river to get water for the second time, she picked up wild duck eggs!
Ji Zhao felt that her luck had changed!
