The burning heat, along with the sand dust, irritated their lungs.

If the door was open, it meant that the owner had already left. The car was big, so she thought about how she would be able to sleep comfortably inside. She walked a few steps toward the driver seat and opened the door wider. Then, she peeked inside the car.
