Chapter 56 - Protection

Xiu Mei blinked in bewilderment. Her mind blanked out automatically after receiving that information.

...the animals here can understand language?

'Am I somehow inside an illusion right now?' Xiu Mei thought.

Or did she just discover a whole different reality?

Crazy thoughts wandered inside Xiu Mei's head after listening to Lu Chen's words. I mean, who wouldn't be?

Somehow, she weirdly felt that the animals here seem to know that she's quite afraid of them.

Second, the pet lion little Qiang had just introduced her seemed to had scrutinized her from top to toe before acknowledging her.

Third, and the maddest of them all, Lu Chen had just declared that the animals could understand all the things she had been saying.

With those three points, the only conclusion she could really think of was that she entered in some kind of fantasy world in her sleep or this is the other side of reality that she hadn't discovered before.

In the line of her family's work, she had listened to his great grandpa's stories of war. From time to time, he would tell her about his journey in some witchcraft places to investigate and decide whether they are a threat to the country. Xiu Mei herself didn't understand what was witchcraft at that age.

Her grandmother would also tell her stories about the spirits of people she met when she was still in her earlier years. As a kid, she had thought that these stories were so fascinating but as she grew up, she thought that the elders in her family must have been enjoying so much in tricking her.

She actually believed their stories until before high school! That's ridiculous!!

And now, Lu Chen was saying that the animals he took care of can understand her.

Hmm…. If she compared it to her views in primary school, this one would have been more plausible.

"Don't think too deeply about it." Lu Chen's deep voice sounded.

She c.o.c.ked her head, questioning him.

"As I've said before, all of the animals here were trained for quite a long time." His hand that circled on her waist comfortably went unnoticed to Xiu Mei. He even drew small circles on the spine of her back but she seemed too curious and confused at the moment that she wasn't aware how Lu Chen was clearly taking advantage of her putting her guard down.

With a curve on his lips and a glint of naughtiness on his eyes, he continued. "They are trained to be a companion and protection."

Xiu Mei, who was still in Lu Chen's embrace, furrowed her brows.

"Companion and protection? For what?"

Is Lu Chen's life in danger? Is he being threatened by some nasty people?

Her sight wandered around as she thought back to all the people she had met before for work. Her forehead creased.

Not many people really had the guts to dare to threated Lu Chen. As a businessman, Lu Chen is famously called as the emperor. He is ferocious yet wise, and he wants to have the greatest result in every business venture he takes.

He's an intelligent businessman whose words seem like a decree that brings prosperity to the empire. And that was how Lu Corporation was built today.

But people who are envious of his success could still be counted in more than two hands. She had met a lot of people who tried to poach her from Lu Chen but utterly failed. Everytime Lu Chen gets a word like this, most companies would suddenly be closed down and go bankrupt.

That's why almost every person in the business industry is wary and fearful of Lu Chen. Because no matter how great he is, they are still scared of the fact that maybe one day, he might target them and instantly crumble their powers into dust.

So really, who is the stupid one to dare try to threaten Lu Chen's safety to the point that he had to raise a lion and a tiger for protection?

With her question, Lu Chen's gaze shook in a split second before it returned to its playful gaze on Xiu Mei. "Just in case."

"Just in case what?"

Lu Chen stretched out his hand to smoothen her hair. "Just in case someone tries to hit on you."

"What?" Xiu Mei had a feeling that Lu Chen dodged her question. She blinked before pushing the question once again.

"Are you lying to me?" Because she was pretty sure that Lu Chen was just playing with her when he said that he did all this just in case someone tries to hit on her. It's a ridiculous thought that Lu Chen had prepared all these years before they even met.

Who was he trying to fool? A ten-year-old?

"Why would a lie to you?" Lu Chen replied, neither confirming or denying her accusation. He wasn't lying to her at all, but rather, he's just vaguely replying to her.

This little wife of his might runaway if she knew the real reason why he had to do all these. He knew what kind of danger Lu Chen was pulling Xiu Mei into. And if she discovers the reason why later on, he was sure that Xiu Mei would certainly get mad at him.

After all, who would want to live and worry every day that someone might be pulling a trigger just behind their heads?

His eyes glinted as he remembered the numerous presents that were being delivered in the company. All of them were filled with horrendous things inside and more than that, Lu Chen wasn't happy with the fact that they were all being delivered to Xiu Mei.

He had to intercept even the presents that were all going to be delivered at her home. Lu Chen's eyes dimmed as the thought of someone clearly threatening Xiu Mei was being too direct.

And until now, his people have yet to discover who was behind all those presents. He grew concerned as he pondered the culprit behind all of this. Is it done by his enemies or….?

His grip on Xiu Mei's waist unconsciously tightened.

Either way, he would be protecting her. He knew that he does not have any feelings of love for her yet, but even though it might be like that, he still has the instinct that he must protect her at all costs.
