Chapter 19 - Running away

"I will only love you, Xiu Mei." His resolute eyes clearly showed Xiu Mei that what Lu Chen was saying was true that she couldn't look away.

For reasons unknown, his eyes felt like a dark whirlpool slowly sucking her in. And she knew that if she gets drowned in his eyes, there's no turning back anymore.

She suddenly felt scared. This unfamiliar situation, the one she least expected. Especially from this person in front of her.

Xiu Mei stopped her hands that was itching to reach out at her chest. Her heart was beating erratically that she couldn't stop it.

Lu Chen on the other hand felt slightly anxious as he kept watching Xiu Mei for her reaction. After all, he was inexperienced at this area.

"Confess and court her." Was what his bestfriends had said.

And that's what he did.

He confessed(Marry me. I will only love you.) and he will court her to show his sincerity.

He was completely determined to make Xiu Mei his son's mother. He will never let her go.

The two sat in complete silence. Xiu Mei didn't reject Lu Chen outrightly this time, as she can feel his sincerity this time.

"I-"

"Sir, you have an emergency call from the Europe office." It was Lu Shao's voice.

Her sentence was cut off when the intercom inside Lu Chen's office blared to life once again.

Lu Chen almost wanted to smash the phone for always interrupting his important conversations. He grumpily stood from his seat and answered the connected call.

On the other hand, Xiu Mei sighed in relief. She didn't actually know what to respond at his confession and now is the right time to runaway.

She stood up and signaled Lu Chen that she'll be leaving the room. She didn't even bother waiting for his response as she left his office.

Quickly, she gathered her things.

"I have to move forward my field visit schedule because something came up. If someone calls for me for something urgent, inform me immediately." Xiu Mei instructed to her assistant before leaving.

She bid goodbye to Lu Shao who was watching her running away from his boss. She was sure that Lu Shao is aware of Lu Chen's plans, and her reaction would definitely be reported to his boss.

But she doesn't care. What she needs to do right now is run away to have some space and time to think about everything.

After meeting with the field staff, she finally had the time to spend for herself.

Xiu Mei watched the sky blanketed by the stars as she walked across the parking lot. It was already 8 pm when the meeting ended and now, she was walking back to her car to drive home.

"Miss Xiu!" A voice called her name. Xiu Mei reflexively turned around and saw one of the staff trying to catch up to her.

"Yes?"

"We forgot to give you this reports since it was just submitted while we were in the middle of the meeting." The said staff handed her the brown envelope. Xiu Mei accepted it before climbing to her car.

"Goodnight, and thanks." Then she left.

After washing up, she sat in front of the dresser to do her night routine of applying skin products. Finishing up, her eyes trailed onto the brown envelope that was last minutely given by the field staff.

Being a workaholic that she is, she couldn't stop herself and pulled out the papers inside. It was just a few pages and she quickly skimmed through the first page.

Few seconds later, she halted. Her eyes glued to the couple of words printed on the paper.

"...raw materials are sourced at Mt.Taifu." She mouthed.

Mt.Taifu.

One of the scenic mountains visited by a lot of tourists.

A place she's been to before.

Her grip on the paper unconciously tightened causing the edges to crease and rip slightly.

Mt.Taifu...

It was the location where her nightmare all began.
